Summer in the City – Enjoy Vibrant Copenhagen

April 17, 2019

Summer is a special time of year to explore Copenhagen. The whole city comes alive. Copenhageners love to take to the water. Between 1st June and 30th September, open air swimming takes place at Islands Brygge Harbour Bath with the city's skyline in full view. Copenhageners often pass here for a dip on their way home from work. The quality of the water is checked daily by authorities. There are five pools including two designated pools for children. The area surrounding the pools includes a lawn area, ideal for sun-bathing and picnics.

Vesterbro, Copenhagen's meatpacking district has been transformed over the years into an art and foodie hub with plenty of outdoor space to relax and dine at, making this an ideal base for summer breaks.

The Absalon Hotel is home to 161 suites and bedrooms and plays a large role in bringing local Copenhageners together with visitors to this city. The bold designs including wallpapers and fabrics at the hotel are by the UK's Designers Guild. The Absalon Hotel is home to a bar and courtyard and offers guests "Velorbis" bikes to rent to further explore. Throughout the summer the hotel also hosts jazz events as part of the annual Copenhagen Jazz Festival which this year runs between 5th July and 14th July.  More than 250,000 people make Copenhagen Jazz Festival one of the biggest, inclusive jazz events of its kind in Europe.

During ten days in June, the Copenhagen Photo Festival will take over galleries, museums and streets all over the city. There will be photo exhibitions in metro trains, in major streets in the city, at the town hall square, and several other known and unknown places, making photography easily accessible to everyone. During the festival it is possible to experience pictures taken by national and international photographic elite working within contemporary art, portrait- and documentary photography. Artist talks, workshops, seminars and photo tours are also available. Copenhagen Photo Festival is the largest photography event in Scandinavia.

Other festivals throughout the summer in Copenhagen include:

  • Distortion – a week of emerging dance music

  • Copenhagen Pride – August annual festival around the centre of the city

  • Strøm Festival – free concerts with some of the electronic scenes’ greatest names

  • Summer Classic – classical music in Tivoli Gardens, less than 5 minutes from the Absalon

  • 3 Days of Design – an opportunity to get an insight into design in Copenhagen and meet brands

Guests at The Absalon Hotel can easily jump on a bike and explore the city. From Vesterbro the colourful elevated bike bridge connects cyclists to Islands Brygge. Cyclists cross the harbour 7 meters above the water and 'The Bicycle Snake' allows cyclists to arrive in style and with the most wonderful views of Copenhagen's harbour and towers. Copenhagen will host the Grand Départ of the Tour de France in 2021. This is Europe’s cycling capital and Copenhagen intends to be carbon-neutral by 2025.

Heading to the beach takes just a few minutes - Can't decide between city break and beach holiday? Well, you don't have to. Svanemøllen and Amager Beach Park are just two examples of popular, sandy stretches not far from the centre. If you are looking to take a trip out of the city, there's plenty of beautiful coastline to explore all over Zealand.

The Absalon Hotel operates a CONCEPT24 package which allows a late departure at no extra cost meaning the guest keeps the room for 24 hours, no matter what the time of arrival. For guests staying for more than one night an option to decline housekeeping and opt for one of four experiences instead is available via the hotel’s CONCEPT GREEN package. The hotel remains family-run by Karen Nedergaard. Karen’s grandmother Erna Andersen founded the Absalon Hotel Group over 80 years ago.
