Summer time and the wonderful outdoors in North Devon staying at Highbullen Hotel

May 1, 2019

Highbullen Hotel is ideally situated to explore the wonderful outdoors around North Devon and is the perfect home-from-home. Highbullen combines an interesting history dating back to 1879 enhanced with contemporary touches and modern luxuries, set within a sprawling 127-acre estate with magnificent views across the Mole Valley and Exmoor National Park. This is the hotel to explore North Devon.

Beaches: The wonderful beaches of North Devon including Saunton Sands, Woolacombe, Putsborough are all good for surfing or family days out and within quick driving distance from the hotel.

Cycling: Visitors will find that the Tarka Trail is one of the UK's most popular traffic-free cycle routes.  It runs along the route of a former railway and forms part of the famous Devon Coast to Coast cycle route from Ilfracombe to Plymouth.

Gardens: North Devon has some excellent gardens to visit. RHS Rosemoor and Castle Hill are two great local gardens to explore. RHS Rosemoor in Great Torrington, offers a relaxing day out as visitors explore this enchanting 65-acre garden. Rosemoor is a beautiful garden, carefully planted to retain the essence of rural North Devon within a dramatic backdrop of steep wooded valley sides. In all seasons Rosemoor has colours, scents and textures to stimulate your senses in both formal and informal gardens, plus woodland walks, water features and open spaces.

Walking: There is an intimate green charm to walks around Exmoor. The Moors also provide plenty of myth and legend to explore. But walking here is a joy and walkers will encounter subtle blends of prehistoric past and wilderness present. Highbullen can provide written and mapped walk details for 6 walks local to the hotel.  The shortest is a half hour route around the hotel and village, the longest a walk on Exmoor, taking in the highest cliffs in England with views over the Bristol Channel to South Wales, as well as Exmoor’s famous wooded combes and heather covered moorland, with its wealth of wildlife.

  • Walk 1 - 30 to 45 minutes, departing from the hotel, an easy stroll around the village of Chittlehamholt.

  • Walk 2 - 60 to 90 minutes, departing from the hotel, a demanding circular walk across countryside and through woods.

  • Walk 3 - 90+ minutes, departing from the hotel, a woodland walk ideal for those keen on flora and fauna.  Can be extended to take in a section along the River Mole.

  • Walk 4 - 2 to 3 hours, departing from the hotel, a circular walk taking in great local views.

  • Walk 5 - 3 to 4 hours, a circular walk taking in superb North Devon woodland, streams, open farmland and superb views or the ancient Devon landscapes and villages.

  • Walk 6 - 3+ hours, a circular walk taking in cliffs, coastline, wooded combes and open Exmoor moorland.

After all that activity, Highbullen Hotel really does offer everything guests need to unwind. Formal dining takes place in the AA 2 Rosette Devon View Restaurant, under the careful watch of head chef Stephen Walker. The elegant dining room features floor to ceiling windows, granting spectacular panoramic views across the Devon countryside over to Exmoor. The menu showcases seasonal and local produce with a modern British theme across all dishes. An extensive wine list offers wines from the old and new worlds and staff can suggest wine pairings.

Highbullen recently opened Laura Ashley The Tea Room. Designed in the distinctive Laura Ashley style, the room accommodates 74 covers, providing guests with unrivalled views bringing together the quintessence of England: the timelessness of afternoon tea, elegant country living and one of the most iconic English brands.
