10 Foodie Moments at Middlethorpe Hall – York’s Only Country House Hotel

January 13, 2020

The restaurant at Middlethorpe Hall has been awarded two AA Rosettes. Dining at York’s only country house hotel is a truly unique experience. The beautiful William and Mary house was formally the home of the famous 18th century diarist Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. The combined experience of Head Chef Ashley Binder and Pastry Chef Paul Harrison produce superb menus that have won many accolades over the years, and continue to attract connoisseurs of fine food. Middlethorpe Hall is filled with history and offers an exciting backdrop for a variety of fine dining experiences including:

  • The 1699 oak panelled dining room provides the perfect setting to enjoy the contemporary take on traditional British food. Under the command of Restaurant Manager Liam Warwick, guests dine by candlelight in the evenings and enjoy front row seats to the award-winning gardens

  • Head Chef Ashley Binder’s carefully designed dinner 'Tasting Menu' with paired wines offers a gourmet experience, while dishes are individually priced on the 'a la carte' dinner menu. A 'Traditional Menu' is available Sunday to Friday for resident guests only

  • The ‘Pudding Menu’ features nine options always with three seasonal choices and is partnered to a Pudding Wine card featuring 13 wines from as far as Chile and New Zealand

  • Lunch under daylight is a delicious moment all round with wonderful garden views. From Monday 6th January, the Special Luncheon Offer will be '3 courses for the price of 2' at £26.50, Monday to Saturday

  • Afternoon Tea at Middlethorpe Hall is a long-lasting tradition enhanced with a fine selection of pastries created by Long-standing Pastry Chef Paul Harrison. Both a Traditional Afternoon Tea menu and a Champagne Afternoon Tea menu are available

  • A Snack Menu is available at various times in the day and includes a ‘Yorkshire Bites’ section including a Ploughman’s Lunch and Cheese Scones. Luncheon on the South facing Terrace is a special treat during the Summer months

  • The locally sourced and freshly cooked Yorkshire Breakfast is a precursor to the day guests have planned ahead and is taken in the dining room or can be delivered to the guests’ bedroom upon request

  • A potager, or kitchen garden produces fruits, vegetables and herbs which are used by the chefs. Guests can visit the kitchen gardens throughout the year and interact with Head Gardener Andrew Leighton for special tips and cuttings

  • A 38-page wine list crosses the old and new worlds and features tasting notes and tips on selecting the perfect wine with any meal. A Bin End list offers special wines at final chance prices

  • Private dining in The Dovecote is historic and unique. It is surrounded by the hotel’s award-winning walled garden and home to an extensive wine collection. It is the perfect break out room for wine tasting events
